What does community participation look like in Sydney?
In Sydney, community participation means getting out to the places you enjoy with a worker who helps you plan, travel and take part. It can be as simple as a weekly coffee or as big as a day at the footy.
Sydney gives you a lot of choice. Some people like a walk around the Royal Botanic Garden or Centennial Park. Others prefer the harbourside paths at Circular Quay, a swim at an ocean pool, or a quiet afternoon at the State Library of NSW.
Your worker can also help with:
- shopping trips to Westfield centres, local markets or Paddy's Markets in Haymarket
- classes, clubs and men's or women's groups at local community centres
- watching sport at the SCG, Allianz Stadium or your local ground
- visiting family, places of worship or cultural events
The aim is to build your confidence so you can do more of what matters to you. Read more about our community participation support.
How do support workers get around Sydney with you?
Sydney support workers travel with you on trains, buses, ferries and light rail using an Opal card or contactless payment, or they drive you if that is in your plan.
Public transport is often the easiest way to reach the city, the beaches or the harbour. Many train stations and wharves have lifts and ramps, and your worker can check accessible stops before you head out. If crowds are hard for you, your worker can plan trips outside peak hours.
If you hold an NSW Companion Card, your worker may get free entry at participating venues and events. Some transport operators also recognise the card, so check before you travel.
Some people want to learn to travel on their own. A worker can practise the same trip with you each week, then step back as you gain confidence. Find out more about travel and transport support.
Can I get a support worker who shares my language or culture in Sydney?
Yes. Sydney is home to large multicultural communities, and Enrichment Care has carers from more than 30 cultural and minority backgrounds, including Burmese-, Chinese- and Korean-speaking workers.
Being understood makes care feel safer. A worker who speaks your language can explain things clearly, talk with your family and respect the way your household does things, such as food, prayer times and who is in the room for personal care.
We match on more than language. We also look at personality, interests, gender preference and the kind of support you need. For example, someone who loves rugby league and cooks halal meals at home might be matched with a worker who shares both.
Tell us what matters to you and we will check who is available near your suburb. You can read more about culturally matched disability support.
How do I start NDIS support with Enrichment Care in Sydney?
You start by calling 1300 543 123 or filling in the form on our find your support worker page. We then talk through your goals, routine and preferences.
Next, we send you profiles of workers who suit you and live or work near your area. You choose who you would like to meet. Because our office is in Surry Hills, a coordinator can often attend the meet and greet in person if you live in Sydney.
The meet and greet is a relaxed chat at home or somewhere you feel comfortable. If it feels right, we agree on a service agreement and a start date. If it does not, we find someone else.
Already with another provider? We can help you switch. We will walk you through notice periods and paperwork so your supports keep going.
