1. Are you (or the person you are asking for) under 65?
2. Do you live in Australia as a citizen, permanent visa holder or Protected Special Category Visa holder?
3. Is the disability likely to be permanent, or would early intervention help (for example, a young child with developmental delay)?
4. Does it substantially affect everyday activities such as moving around, communicating, learning, self-care or social life?

How to apply for the NDIS

What are the NDIS eligibility requirements?

To be eligible you generally need to meet age, residence and disability or early intervention requirements.

  • Age: under 65 when you apply.
  • Residence: live in Australia and be an Australian citizen, a permanent visa holder or a Protected Special Category Visa holder.
  • Disability: a disability that is likely to be permanent and substantially reduces your ability to do everyday activities, or
  • Early intervention: support now would reduce your future needs, including for young children with developmental delay.

The NDIA is introducing changes to assessments during 2026, so check ndis.gov.au for the latest requirements.

What should I do next?

If you are likely to be eligible, gather evidence with your treating health professional and lodge an access request. Read how to apply for the NDIS, or call the NDIA on 1800 800 110.

Eligibility: common questions

Is this checker an official NDIS assessment?

No. It is a quick guide based on the main access criteria published by the NDIA. Only the NDIA can decide whether you are eligible. Contact them on 1800 800 110 or talk to a Local Area Coordinator.

What if I am not eligible for the NDIS?

You may still be able to get help through other services, such as state programs, community health or aged care. A Local Area Coordinator can help you find local supports, and you can reapply if your situation changes.

What evidence do I need to apply?

You will need evidence of your disability and how it affects everyday life, usually from your treating health professional. Our guide on how to apply explains what to include.
