What can I do with a support worker in Canberra?
In Canberra, a support worker can help you enjoy the lake, national institutions, town centres and local sport, with support that matches your energy and interests.
Lake Burley Griffin has flat paths that suit walks and rides. The National Library, National Gallery, National Museum and Questacon are close together and most have step-free access. The weekend markets in places like the Old Bus Depot and the Capital Region Farmers Market at Exhibition Park are also popular.
Your worker can help you:
- visit your local library or community centre for classes and groups
- shop at the Canberra Centre or your town centre in Belconnen, Woden or Tuggeranong
- watch the Raiders or the Brumbies play at home
- attend events like Floriade in spring
Canberra winters are cold, so your worker will plan indoor options when the weather turns. Read about community participation.
How do support workers get around Canberra?
Canberra support workers travel with you on Transport Canberra buses and light rail using a MyWay+ card or contactless payment, or drive you if transport support is part of your plan.
Light rail runs from Gungahlin to the city along Northbourne Avenue, and rapid bus routes link the town centres of Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong. Canberra is spread out and built around cars, so many people use a mix of car and public transport. Your worker can plan routes that keep walking and transfers short.
If you hold an ACT Companion Card, your worker may get free entry at participating venues and events. Check with the venue or operator before you go.
If your goal is to travel alone, your worker can practise a regular trip with you until it feels easy. Learn more about travel and transport support.
Do you support people in Queanbeyan and the surrounding region?
Yes. Many Canberra workers live in or travel through Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and nearby NSW towns, so we can often support participants just over the border.
The ACT and the surrounding NSW region work as one community for many families. You might live in Queanbeyan and do most of your shopping and activities in Canberra, or live in the ACT with family in Yass or Bungendore. A worker who knows both sides of the border makes that easier.
Towns further out, such as Goulburn and Cooma, depend on finding a worker who lives nearby. We recruit locally so you get someone who can keep regular shifts.
Wherever you live, we match on language, culture, personality and care needs. Our carers come from more than 30 cultural and minority backgrounds. Read about culturally matched support.
How do I get started with Enrichment Care in Canberra?
Call 1300 543 123 or use our find your support worker form. We will talk about your goals, routine and what you want in a worker.
Our office is in Sydney, a few hours up the road, and in the ACT we recruit workers locally. When we find people who suit you and live near your suburb, we send you their profiles. You choose who you want to meet.
The meet and greet happens at home or somewhere you feel comfortable, and family and support coordinators can join. If it feels right, we set up a service agreement and a start date.
If you are changing from another provider, we will help you check your notice period and handle the paperwork, so your support carries on without a gap. You stay in control of the timing.
